SCIROCCO® – an innovative solution for low impact and low ballast flat-roof PV installation

The low ballast of a SCIROCCO® based pv array is a function of its unique geometry: a continuous back panel serves as wind deflector from the North and the gap at the top of the system is instrumental in instantaneously equalizing wind pressures that act on the system, thus reducing uplift by up to 70%.
As part of the thorough review process of the technology, hb Solar commissioned RWDI in Guelph, Ontario to execute wind tunnel tests on 15- and 30-degree SCIROCCO® systems. The results confirmed the existence of the “SCIROCCO® effect,” enabling low-ballast system designs with total system weights commonly between 3-4psf for the entire array: panels, mounting system and ballast. Exposed corners and outlying rows are required to be ballasted heavier, with the interior of an array requiring the lowest ballast.
To provide additional assurance to customers that the design of the system was carried out in full accordance with local building codes and engineering practices, hb Solar engages a third party engineering firm to review the mechanical integrity of SCIROCCO® and provide customers with a stamped drawing for each project.

SCIROCCO® – hybrid anchored solution

The hybrid anchored solution is an advantage where local building codes require consideration for seismic loading.
